White Oak Canyon is part of the Shenandoah National Park. White Oak is also the location of my first official hike. Last year, some friends and I decided a hike would be a great way to end the school year. Immediately, I was fascinated by the pure nature that surrounded me. The hike was about 8 miles long and took about 5 hours. Although 5 hours seemed like a lot of time to me, the time went by quickly. The wilderness was a huge change from the fast paced college life. I was surrounded by a quiet abundance of luscious greenery. Throughout the hike, we encountered little creeks. In the distance, we heard rushing water. When we got to the large waterfall, I was appalled. The height of it was majestic. It cascaded down infinitely and the sound it made was loud but pleasant. We decided to go off trial and cross the river to get closer to the waterfall. Standing in front the waterfall put things into perspective. I awed at God’s wonders. The same Creator that made the stately Shenandoah Valley and all of its waterfalls also made me. All at once I felt so much love and appreciation. “Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord.” –Psalm 98:8-9
