Will Geiger-Calvinization

This past week in my history class we learned about John Calvin and his theory of predestination. Predestination is the notion that it has already been decided whether each individual on earth is to be accepted into heaven or damned to hell for eternity following their passing from this life. I remembered reading something about Calvin in the Turner text a while ago so I went back to check it out to see if I could make any connections and make a blog post out of it. Calvin states that pilgrimages, "aided no man's salvation". He emphasized faith, rather than good works, as a way to reach heaven. Calvin's justification for his theory is that someone who is predestined to go to heaven will by nature partake in good works, thus their worthiness to go to heaven. This is circular logic: if you are predestined to go to heaven then you will do good things, and if you do good things it isn't because you are trying to better your chances at ascendance to heaven, it's because you are predestined to go there anyway. The reason I could identify that circular logic is because we learned about the magic Hawaiian mushrooms a few weeks back, and Dr. Redick showed us it's faulty logic.
